Exploring the New DZO X-Tract: Game-Changing Probe Lens!
Today I'm super excited to dive into something special—the DZO X-Tract, an 18-28mm zoom macro probe lens that's truly built like a tank! If first impressions count, this lens nails it.
Now, many of you know I’ve been using the trusty Laowa probe lens for years, and it's served me well. But technology evolves, and with the DZO X-Tract, it feels like we're leaping forward.
I’ve listed a few thoughts on the features below and you can check out my overview video at the end.
Heavy-Duty & Built for the Pros
The DZO X-Tract isn't messing around. It's designed for heavy-duty, professional studio work, and one of its coolest features is its zoom capability. Unlike traditional probe lenses, this one smoothly zooms from 18mm to 28mm, and it’s fully submersible—perfect for those adventurous shots!
Lighting and High-Speed Challenges Solved?
One thing about previous probe lenses is the light loss, especially when doing high-speed filming. The X-Tract lens starts at T8, giving you a much wider aperture than the usual F14 of other probes. It doesn't solve all your lighting woes, but it definitely helps!
Infinite Barrel Rotation
Ever needed infinite rotation on a probe lens? Probably not until now! The X-Tract lets the barrel rotate endlessly—fantastic for creative freedom. Just note, you'll need to sacrifice control over focus and zoom while using this feature. Thankfully, there's a handy lock to keep things steady otherwise.
Built for Precision
The lens feels significantly sturdier and heavier than the older versions, with incredibly smooth gear rings. Its 300-degree focus throw is a dream for precision tasks, especially when you're using motion control setups.
Unique 90-Degree Perspective
Because it's a 90-degree lens, the output is mirrored, requiring a quick fix in post-production. But the creative perspectives you gain with this are worth it.
Stability is Key
Probe lenses are notoriously shaky, especially handheld. That’s why a solid rigging system is essential. Even tiny vibrations get massively amplified by the lens length, so secure mounting and stabilization are crucial, especially when paired with motion control robots.
Final Thoughts
Am I getting one? Absolutely! This lens is a massive upgrade from my old probe lens, which served me faithfully for five years. If you’re considering stepping up your probe lens game, the DZO X-Tract is miles ahead.
Huge thanks to the team at Cinegear Pro for sending over this demo. I'm genuinely impressed and already looking forward to my next shoot with this beast!
